What is Lingua Franca?
Lingua franca is a language widely used as another means of
communication (besides the mother tongue) among people who speak other
languages. It is noticed when people speaking different languages have to
communicate, such as in commerce, diplomacy, and multi-cultural regions. Lingua
franca is a whole language or a fundamental — pidgin-like/creole.
Definition and Meaning:
A lingua franca is a language that you can use to talk with
people, which would otherwise be impossible. It bridges the communication gap
between cultures. It acts as a fluent medium for all kinds of people in
commerce, diplomacy, and any casual dealings or engagement. Lingua franca
languages tend to reduce complex linguistic pluralism so they can be better
comprehensible and used by the majority.
For example, English is the shared language in the United
States. While English is not the official language of the US at the federal
level, it is by far the most spoken language in education and media, with
various levels of preservation in three dozen states' diminutive primary legal
statuses. It's a binding factor for the variety of language communities within
the US to ensure effective conversation and social integration.
1. Swahili in East Africa: Swahili is the native language of
only about five million people (6% of the population) if used as a first
language, and an additional sixteen million or so use it as a second language
among others who speak other languages natively.
In the High Middle Ages, different lingua franca existed
throughout parts of Europe and the Mediterranean basin, connecting merchants
with sailors who spoke various languages that didn't overlap. A new pidgin
language developed since other languages could not help but be employed to
effect commerce or encourage dialogue. This pidgin was called Lingua Franca and
incorporated Italian, Occitan, French, Greek (native to the Mediterranean
coast), Arabic, and Turkish. It needed to be standardized but flexible to fit
the requirements of its users, who were mostly traders.
Eventually, the Lingua Franca developed a more standardized
form and expanded beyond its sea-going origin. It affected different pidgin
& creole languages and its request inside a particular region over the
formation of multilingual communication strategies.
